Paul Pelosi made his first public appearance in Washington, D.C., since he was attacked at his house in late October by attending the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday while wearing a hat and just one glove.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) 82-year-old husband was attacked in their home in California by a person who was apparently looking for the lawmaker. Later, Paul Pelosi had surgery for a fractured head and wounds to his right arm and hands.
The Sunday night celebration honoring the 2018 Kennedy Center honorees—singer Gladys Knight, band U2, actor and human rights advocate George Clooney, composer and conductor Tania León, and Christian singer Amy Grant—found Paul Pelosi by his wife’s side.
Vice President Harris, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, and the Pelosis were sat next to each other.
Paul Pelosi stood to cheer throughout the event while donning a black hat with a black brim and a single black glove.
The Pelosis received a shout-out from Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein during his speech on Sunday night, prompting a resounding standing ovation.
“I would like to single out one member of Congress who has been, for more than several decades, really devoted to the Kennedy Center — and her husband of 60 years who’s here with us as well — Nancy Pelosi,” he said.
After the ceremony, Paul Pelosi was seen conversing and having some fun while eating dinner at a reception at the Kennedy Center.
Prior to his trial, David DePape, the accused attacker of Pelosi, is being jailed without cash bailbond. He is accused by the state of attempted murder, burglary, and maltreatment of the elderly. He is also charged federally with attempted kidnapping of an official of the United States.
According to reports, the 42-year-old claimed to be on a suicide mission to kidnapped the Speaker, who was in Washington, D.C. if she lied, and held her hostage while threatening to shatter her kneecaps.
The incident was a contributing factor in Nancy Pelosi’s decision to leave her long-held position as the senior House leader.
