McCarthy insisted that Trump did not intend for people to protest. He emphasized the current case against the former president’s weakness, saying prosecutors are “trying to make a misdemeanor a felony.” He doesn’t see any other outcome than Trump winning, implying that supporters should simply be patient and ride out the storm.
Some people cheer an arrest, daring prosecutors to bring Trump to trial. According to AP News, the former president believes the move will help him in the polls. Whether or not he is charged — or even convicted — the popular Republican frontrunner insists he will not withdraw from the presidential race. His supporters appear to be equally unfazed.
Trump could face charges for allegedly bribing adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep a previous affair with her hidden during the 2016 presidential election. To cover his tracks, he allegedly funneled $130,000 to the porn star through lawyer Michael Cohen and possibly forged business accounting records. According to FiveThirtyEight, the case in New York is the first of many that Trump could face.
McCarthy has promised to use House resources to look into any “politically motivated prosecutions” if Trump is imprisoned. Other supporters of the former president, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), have urged Americans to attend the presidential candidate’s March 25 rally in Waco, Texas, rather than participate in any destructive or counterproductive protests.
