Steve Scalise, a Republican representing Louisiana, wasted no time in announcing his candidacy just two days following McCarthy’s removal from office. In his announcement letter, Scalise strategically touched upon all the key conservative talking points, aiming to resonate with the eight Republicans who sided with the Democrats in ousting McCarthy from his position.
Tom Emmer, a Republican representing Minnesota, currently holds the position of House Majority Whip. Should he choose to pursue the role of speaker, he possesses a significant ally in this endeavor. Representative Matt Gaetz himself recommended Emmer as a potential successor to McCarthy.
