Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a member of the Republican Party, declared on social media this Sunday that he is pleased to give his endorsement to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination.
“Today, I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for President. Now more than ever, America needs a President who will secure the border and prioritize national security. President Trump is the clear choice to get the job done.”

The ex-president joined the governor in Edinburg, Texas, on Sunday for Abbott’s yearly pre-Thanksgiving custom of providing tamales to Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas National Guardsmen stationed along the southern border as part of the governor’s Operation Lone Star initiative.
The purpose of the visit is to bring attention to the contentious issue of unauthorized immigration and the security of the border.
For the past two and a half years, the border has been a significant concern for Republican voters as well as GOP leaders and politicians. This has resulted in strong disapproval of the way President Biden’s administration is managing the crisis and addressing the increase in migrant border crossings.
Trump committed to initiating the most extensive mass deportation initiative in U.S. history if he secures re-election. He also vowed to reimplement travel bans and reinstate his 2019 “Remain in Mexico” initiative. This program compelled non-Mexican asylum seekers seeking entry at the southern border to remain in Mexico until their cases were resolved.
In 2021, Trump gave his support to Abbott, the conservative governor running for re-election, who encountered several primary challenges from within the right-wing.
He secured a resounding renomination victory in March 2022 and went on to triumph over his Democratic opponent, former Representative Beto O’Rourke, last November, securing his third term as governor.
According to individuals within the governor’s political circle, Abbott expressed appreciation for Trump’s early endorsement in the previous election cycle, and it seems he is reciprocating the gesture now.
Trump is entering his third consecutive bid for the presidency and currently holds the top position as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida and former Ambassador to the United Nations, also former Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, are presently contending for a distant second position in the polls.
