The situation surrounding the election interference allegations against former President Donald Trump in Georgia has become complex, as there are claims suggesting an inappropriate romantic relationship between the District Attorney and a key prosecutor during her recruitment of him for the case.
The allegations are made by Mike Roman, a participant in Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign and a defendant in the case. Roman is confronting seven criminal charges, asserting his significant involvement in Trump’s endeavors to challenge the outcome of the 2020 election.
As per documents submitted by Ashleigh Merchant, who serves as Roman’s lawyer, the claim is that Fani Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County, is currently in a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor appointed by Willis for the case against Roman. An attorney representing Roman has proposed that this improper relationship between Willis and Wade poses a conflict of interest.
Willis has strongly refuted the accusations, contending that the claims against her stem from Joycelyn Wade, the estranged wife of Nathan Wade, with the apparent intention of tarnishing Willis’s reputation. According to Willis, the Wades have been living separately for more than two years, and they are currently undergoing a no-fault divorce process.
Although Merchant has not presented concrete evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Wade and Willis, Willis has not directly responded to the allegations. Merchant implies that Willis might be trying to fabricate a conspiracy where there is none to evade addressing questions about her connection with Wade.
Merchant highlighted that Wade has utilized the funds received for his role as a prosecutor in the case to finance extravagant vacations for Willis, thereby gaining substantial profit from the position Willis appointed him to.
Norm Eisen, who served as the special counsel to the House Committee on the Judiciary during Trump’s impeachment and is a supporter of Willis, has recommended that Wade resign from his role as prosecutor in light of the allegations surrounding an inappropriate relationship.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee scheduled a hearing for February 15th to address the motion submitted by Ashleigh Merchant.
