In the fiscal year 2022, there were over 2.7 million interactions at the country’s borders, and there have already been about 1.3 million this fiscal year, according to statistics from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
These figures include alone and accompanied juveniles, single adults, and family units detained at the USA’s northern and southern land borders.
The number of interactions also includes terrorists, as per reports. According to the source, CBP supplied data showing that officers detained 16 individuals on the FBI’s terror watch list at the southern border in February while they were traveling between ports of entry.
The number of such people will probably surpass the number of suspected terrorists detained before entering the US during the fiscal year 2022 if the current rate of encounters continues.
69 individuals on the FBI terror watch list have been barred from entering the country by CBP. Agents ceased 98 in 2022. Data from prior years revealed concerning numbers. Agents of the border patrol only came into contact with eight people on the organization’s terror watch list between 2017 and 2020. Yet, that number nearly doubled in 2021, increasing the encounters to 15.
According to CBP statistics, 214 individuals on the Terrorism Screening Database (TSDB) have reportedly attempted to enter the US since October 2022, taking into account encounters at ports of entry at both the southern and northern borders. Agents were successful in capturing 380 people at both borders in 2022.
Republicans are urging President Joe Biden and his administration to take action because they believe the statistics demonstrate the necessity for increased border security.
