During an Axios gathering on Thursday, March 7th, Florida Representative Byron Donalds, a potential vice presidential candidate for President Donald Trump, expressed that if chosen, he might refuse to certify the 2028 election outcomes.
When questioned by Sophia Cai of Axios about his stance on certifying election results as vice president, Byron affirmed that he would certify them as long as electoral regulations were adhered to.
However, he clarified that if circumstances mirrored those of the 2020 election, he would abstain from certifying the results. Byron underscored the duty of elected officials to uphold the law regardless of public sentiment. He pointed out discrepancies in voting procedures during the 2020 election, indicating that he wouldn’t have followed the actions of then-Vice President Mike Pence in certifying the results.
Byron has been considered as a possible pick for Vice President by the probable Republican Presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Other contenders in the mix include former Republican candidate and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who withdrew from the race in late January.
Donalds gained attention following President Biden’s State of the Union address, labeling the president’s remarks, particularly those regarding the Supreme Court, as repugnant. During an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News with Maria Bartiromo, he insinuated that the left, including Biden, champions respect for American institutions like the Supreme Court until outcomes diverge from their preferences, such as the recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Donalds further remarked that the speech resembled more of a campaign address, leaning heavily towards partisanship rather than fostering unity. The Florida Representative implied that President Biden’s State of the Union speech aimed to demonstrate his competence following ongoing scrutiny regarding his mental acuity and abilities. He emphasized that those on the left ought to harbor genuine concerns about Biden’s capabilities.
