After a vicious and gory hammer attack on the House speaker’s husband that has horrified the US as it prepares for tense and vital midterm elections, Nancy Pelosi said her family is devastated and scared.
On Friday, a burglar broke into Pelosi’s San Francisco home through a back entrance.
Paul Pelosi, 82, needed surgery to treat a fractured skull and severe wounds to his right arm and hands, but his doctors anticipate that he will fully recover. However, the terrible attack—conducted by a guy who had posted right-wing conspiracy theories online—came as the US was receiving more and more alerts about escalating political unrest.
“We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving. Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery.”
Paul Pelosi is still in the hospital, but the speaker says things are getting better.
The attacker is currently being investigated for attempted murder and other crimes.
The assailant has been identified by authorities as 42-year-old David DePape. The San Francisco district attorney’s office has stated that formal charges would be filed on Monday and that his arraignment is anticipated to take place on Tuesday.
He reportedly supported the previous president Donald Trump and adopted the cult-like conspiracy theory QAnon in recent writings on a number of websites. The disorganized posts contained allusions to “satanic pedophilia,” extraterrestrials, antisemitic stereotypes, contempt of women, transgender persons, and tech company censorship.
