21 People Shot Over Single Weekend in Chicago

Chicago witnessed a spike in gun-related incidents during the weekend spanning February 23rd to 25th, 2024, leading to four deaths and causing injuries to at least 21 individuals.

The initial fatal occurrence took place on Friday, February 23rd, a little after 3:30 PM, at Pottawattomie Park on North Rogers Avenue. As reported by ABC 7, two individuals armed with firearms approached two men and two women, initiating gunfire that resulted in the tragic death of a 19-year-old woman.

Shortly thereafter, another tragic incident occurred, as reported by CBS News, when gunfire broke out inside a home on South Vincennes Avenue. This event resulted in the deaths of two adults and a child, identified by CBS News as 14-year-old Amere P. Deese.

These deaths contribute to the worrying figures compiled by the Chicago Sun-Times database, which logged 57 homicides in the city between January 1st, 2024, and February 26th, 2024.

The Chicago police released additional information regarding the violent incidents over the weekend, confirming that a shooting in the West Chatham neighborhood on Sunday evening resulted in three fatalities, including that of a child. The event occurred in close proximity to South Vincennes Avenue and left four individuals injured, with one currently in stable condition.

During a press briefing, law enforcement announced that they are actively seeking two individuals suspected to be linked to the shooting, urging anyone with relevant information to step forward.

Earlier on Sunday, another tragic incident occurred at Pottawattomie Park, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old woman and injuries to three others, including gunshot wounds to the chest, foot, and forehead, respectively. Chicago police reported that the victims were promptly transported to nearby hospitals, while the suspects fled the area.

On Sunday, another shooting occurred, resulting in a 35-year-old man sustaining critical injuries inside a moving vehicle in the Gold Coast neighborhood. The assailant allegedly fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle, while the victim remained hospitalized in critical condition.

The violence persisted into Sunday evening when authorities found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound in a River North hotel room. Furthermore, on Saturday morning, an unsuccessful robbery at a downtown jewelry store led to the perpetrator being shot by someone with a concealed-carry license. Law enforcement promptly arrested the suspect and transported them to a hospital for medical care.

Finally, on Friday evening, shots were fired in the Brainerd neighborhood, resulting in a 37-year-old woman being injured inside her residence on South Loomis Street.
