Dion, who is best known for her rendition of “My Heart Will Go On,” from the 1998 film Titanic, announced on January 15 that she was postponing the final 16 dates of her world tour due to “severe and persistent muscle spasms.” On December 8, Dion revealed that she has been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).
Only one in a million people worldwide suffer from this incredibly rare neurological condition. The thoracic muscles of sufferers gradually stiffen and go through continual spasms, which can occasionally be strong enough to break bones. Anxiety and despair are other signs. Doctors have not yet discovered a cure.
In her heartfelt message, Dion said that the sickness has affected her mobility, and that she is now working with a sports medicine therapist to regain her strength. She admitted that while she misses her admirers, she must put her health first.
